Detroit Plans to Accept Crypto for Taxes in 2025, Embracing Blockchain Innovation

Detroit, Michigan, is set to lead the way as the largest U.S. city to accept cryptocurrency for tax payments. Announced today, the initiative will allow residents to pay taxes and city fees in Bitcoin and other digital currencies starting in 2025. “Detroit is establishing itself as a hub for tech innovation, benefiting residents and businesses alike,” said Mayor Mike Duggan. “We’re thrilled to be among the pioneering cities integrating blockchain into public services, offering Detroiters new, modern payment options.”

City Treasurer Nikhil Patel added that this crypto-payment option will roll out mid-2025, with an exact launch date pending. “Our office is dedicated to streamlining payment processes for an enhanced customer experience,” Patel stated. “This update will broaden access for residents preferring cryptocurrency and promote more efficient digital payment options.”

Detroit's ambitions go beyond just tax payments. The city invites blockchain entrepreneurs to present ideas for blockchain-based civic applications by December 15. These proposals are expected to address solutions that leverage blockchain for transparency, data security, and optimized public services, detailing potential impacts, costs, and benefits for city operations.

By launching this platform, Detroit will help Michigan join a select group of states, including Louisiana, Colorado, and Utah, that allow crypto tax payments. This aligns Detroit with Colorado, which in 2022 became the first state to accept state taxes in cryptocurrency. Whether other Michigan cities will adopt similar systems remains uncertain, but Detroit's move places it at the forefront of cryptocurrency adoption in civic infrastructure.
