John McAfee’s Twitter Account Gets Hacked, Puts Fake Tweets
The euphoria surrounding the cryptocurrencies is so huge these days that investors just want to grab their share of the pie before the price of the digital currency shoots up. As a result, investors have been closely following several top analysts in the market for the right suggestions and recommendations.
John McAfee, the cyber-security pioneer and creator of the McAfee antivirus has been one of the most vocal analysts. McAfee is well-known amongst his followers for airing up his views on buying of cryptocurrencies and specially altcoins. McAfee has been using his Twitter handle to put up his recommendations and views and earlier he was so active that daily he used to tweet the “coin of the day” that resulted in several pumps and dumps.
However, McAfee lately has converted this daily activity into a weekly occurrence. Just when the price of the Bitcoin fell by over 40% last week from its peak-high, McAfee said in an article to MarketWatch that he is confident of Bitcoin and investors can still continue to hold it. He said “For you who are long term investors like myself: (those who always make the most returns), BITCOIN is still the crypto giant. It is at a low price, and will never be cheaper. It will be ten times this price in 2018. Remember – it has the lowest circulating supply of any coin.”
One of the strange things that recently occurred was that McAfee’s Twitter account was hacked which posted some altcoin recommendations from his account. The tweets went out in the form of “coin of the day” and the coins recommended were BAT, NXT, and Siacoin. With nearly over half a million followers the coins price was pumped quickly.
Many believe that the buying activity was done by bots who were made active to follow his recommendations and trade them for quick profits.
This quickly came to the notice of John McAfee following which he soon tweeted:
Although Twitter offers two-factor authentication of the account, McAfee was completely left perplexed as to what could have caused the security breach. In another tweet he said:
John McAfee’s recommendations have been quite famous within his followers and fans as they have often resulted in huge surges.
However, McAfee has previously announced that now he would only be making weekly recommendations with the first coming this Monday. Today, he has also stated that he would be recommending ICOs going forward.
Well, it seems that in spite of no fault of his he was a victim of the cyber attack. Although investors need to take a lesson from this event that they should not jump the gun on anyone’s recommendation and do proper homework before investing.
