Telecommunications Giant T-Mobile Is Still Working On Blockchain Implementation
Blockchain technology has been considered as one of the game-changing technologies to hit the market recently and has even been likened to the dawn of the internet age. As such, a lot of companies are jumping on board so that they adapt to the changes that come with the technology. T-Mobile is one of those firms that have been reported to be working on blockchain implementation.
T-Mobile has reportedly been quietly working on implementing an enterprise blockchain solution for the past few months and there is a chance that it might announce it soon. The U.S telecommunication company’s interest in blockchain seems to have increased after it was recognized for playing an important role in the development of Hyperledger Sawtooth's 1.0 version. Despite this, the work involved in blockchain is not well-known.
T-Mobile has so far managed to maintain a tight seal on the ongoing development, with very few details being revealed. T-Mobile's senior architect for Hyper Directory revealed in November that there were still a few milestones that were not yet achieved. The Hyper Directory is a blockchain proof-of-concept (PoC) that was revealed in November.
The senior architect also revealed that each milestone aligns with T-Mobile’s agenda of taking more advantage of open-source software. For example, Hyper Directory uses Hyperledger Sawtooth to determine how to provide access to the company's cloud-based solutions in a process called identity and access management (IAM). Spanton made some remarks about the cost-cutting and security improvement measures offered by blockchain. He was speaking at the Amazon Re:Invent conference which was held in Las Vegas in December last year.
Spanton made this statement: "Creating Hyper Directory solved core IAM use cases we had in our cloud infrastructure, and building it as a blockchain solution provided unique opportunities to push forward our deep technical expertise."
The adoption of Blockchain technology by T-Mobile might bring a lot of changes to the company’s cloud-based services. Spanton revealed in his first article about Hyper Directory that the blockchain technology should help T-Mobile to overcome some of the problems that it has previously experienced when trying to scale up. Additionally, the new blockchain solution will allow for interoperability which means that it can be operated with some of the other open-source software offered by T-Mobile.
It remains to be seen what T-Mobile will really offer and achieve with the upcoming blockchain solution once it is actually launched. As for now, the limited information builds up the anticipation to the reveal which will hopefully be in the near future.
