Ukraine Starts Accepting Donations in Dogecoin (DOGE) In the Latest Announcement
Following the Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last week, the government of Ukraine has started accepting crypto donations to fund its war against the Asian military giant.
On Wednesday, March 2, Ukrainian Vice Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said that they have started accepting donations in memecoin Dogecoin. He also shared the address of the DOGE wallet along with tagging Dogecoin creator Billy Markus and supporter Elon Musk.
Fedorov tweeted: “Dogecoin exceeded Russian ruble in value. We start to accept donations in meme coin. Now even meme can support our army and save lives from Russian invaders. $DOGE owners of the world, @elonmusk, @BillyM2k, let's do it. Official $DOGE wallet: DS76K9uJJzQjCFvAbpPGtFerp1qkJoeLwL”.
So far, Ukraine has received DOGE donations worth $75,000 to its official address. Dogecoin founder Billy Markus also extended his support tweeting: “Dogecoin folks aren’t usually rich and dogecoin itself is generally used for small transactions, but we are a caring and passionate bunch those who want to help will offer what they can ~ i hope the country can heal and rebuild stronger after all of this”.
Ukraine has been accepting donations in crypto ever since the war erupted last week. Initially, it started accepting donations in BTC and ETH alone. However, looking at the strong support offered by the crypto community, it has extended taking donations in other cryptocurrencies as well. So far, Ukraine has received $50 million in crypto donations.
Polkadot founder Gavin Wood recently donated $5 million in DOT tokens. The official Twitter handle of Ukraines appraised the same stating: “The people of Ukraine fighting for our freedom are forever grateful to Gavin Wood @gavofyork for the generous donation of $5M of @Polkadot $DOT as promised publicly. Thank you from all of us here in Ukraine working for a peaceful future”.
Furthermore, under Project Aid, Ukrainian government has also collaborated with blockchain platform Solana. Interestingly, the government has also decided to accept crypto donations in the form of non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
Decentralized exchange (DEX) Uniswap said that it has built a function that will allow people to convert their Ethereum-based crypto into Ether and send it to the Ukrainian government.
“To ensure that everyone who wants to donate ERC-20 tokens to the Ukrainian government can do so, we built an interface that swaps any token for ETH and then sends it directly to the Ukrainian government in a single transaction,” it noted.
